Les œuvres d’Ugo Rondinone prennent place autant dans l’espace de la galerie que dans un espace public, construisant un monde onirique et mélancolique mêlant fantasmes personnels et images codifiées du corps dans notre société de consommation.</p> À l’occasion du festival Mettre en Scène 2003, Ugo Rondinone investit quatre principaux lieux culturels dans la ville de Rennes par des installations originales. L’installation produite pour la galerie Art &amp; Essai de l’université Rennes 2, prend la forme d’une sculpture sonore composée de modules géométriques en plexiglas noir, serpentant au sein de l’espace. L’imposante façade vitrée de la galerie du TNB a été recouverte de films multicolores, diffusant une luminosité particulière dans un espace d’exposition où sont diffusées, sur moniteurs, les troublantes vidéos de clowns. À La Criée, Ugo Rondinone présente une importante installation vidéo produite pour l’occasion. Les visiteurs sont invités à faire l’expérience d’un dispositif composé de six projections murales et d’un plafond de plexiglas irradiant l’espace du centre d’art d’une lumière de couleur rouge. L’espace sonore ambiant est constitué de la voix d’une chanteuse d’opéra. Sur le toit de l’UBU, est installée une enseigne lumineuse aux couleurs arc-en-ciel déclinant la phrase « Guided by Voices ». Proche de l’écriture nomade de Samuel Beckett et revisitant l’héritage de la sculpture minimale des années 1960, Ugo Rondinone travaille à des espaces visuels, sonores et linguistiques multiples. Dans chacune des œuvres de l’artiste, le visiteur est plongé dans un espace où prévalent l’errance, l’oisiveté, la confusion des genres et l’indétermination du récit. Par sa dimension de production d’œuvres inédites et d’œuvres revisitées, l’exposition Ugo Rondinone organisée dans le cadre du festival Mettre en Scène 2003, constitue une manifestation d’envergure qui rend compte de la richesse plastique et conceptuelle de l’œuvre de l’artiste.
